It's a commonly held belief that Palin is dumb. It's an easy thing to say, but it isn't true.
Rather, she seems to be a reasonably intelligent person who possesses a distinctly incurious and undisciplined mind. Her speech is a perfect example of this. It's a dog's breakfast of mangled quotes, misremembered facts, half-remembered anecdotes, vague ideas (she's for "freedom" and against "tyranny", as if those who disagree with her are not), straw men, peevish personal observations and playground taunts. But this bit really struck me:
[R]egardless of what some politically correct intellectuals say a terrorist like Osama bin Laden is not a freedom fighter. He does not fight for freedom he fights against it and he is fighting against democracy and all of our ancient liberties, how, how dare we want to label him anything that has kind of a positive connotation of being a freedom fighter. And it’s not just about calling evil, evil. It’s not just about being against something but it is being for something right. It’s about being unashamed to defend what is good about our culture and in our country. Not thinking that we must apologize for what America stands for but we must honor our belief in the fundamental rights, in the dignity of every innocent human being.
I know it's useless to try to get this woman to engage with external reality in any way. And I know that it's useless to try to get the mainstream media to ask her a tough question. But really: who are these "politically correct intellectuals" who are saying that Osama bin Laden is a "freedom fighter"? What are their names, please? Can you provide quotes to back up this claim?
Would someone please call her on this? Is there nothing she can say that will provoke a serious question from an actual journalist?
Yep, the same sort of common sense that got the Vermont Catholics where they are today.
Too bad doctor-assisted suicide is out of the question. Because the whole damned Church ought to be put out of its misery.
